Square One
The head of steam I’ve built on the blog has dissipated over the last couple of weeks. A combination of holiday and some deadlines at work haven’t helped. That and the fact my house is a building site and I’m currently living back under my mother’s roof for the first time in about 16 years.
I am increasingly in awe of Matt Webb’s streak. His tips on how to keep up the frequency have been really helpful. Normally on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon when my self imposed deadline of Monday morning is looming.
I have several half started or half finished posts sat in my drafts. I need to pick those up again and get them published… one has potential to be a bit of a beast. My internal editor keeps pushing me on the specifics. I’m not sure the central idea is very coherent. It needs work.
So, in terms of my own streak - it’s back to square one. A clean slate.
The task remains the same. One blog post, each week.
Ideally on a Monday. Posted to Linkedin and Twitter.
They don’t have to be good, they just have to help me understand an issue I’m faced with a little bit better than I might have ordinarily.
Writing as a means of thinking.
The discipline of keeping notes through the week in both soft and hard form and then a quick flurry of activity on a sunday evening to edit and commit to the blog has worked. The self imposed deadline means I’m looking at the world slightly differently. Looking for an angle…. It hasn’t been as daunting as I anticipated it might be. The habits, the process and the routine have meant it’s felt like it’s been getting easier.
Reception for my posts on Bullmore, Toilet Duck and Collaborations was fantastic. Humbling, even. Feedback across the board has been great - so I hope you (whoever you may be) have enjoyed what you’ve read here. I’ve certainly enjoyed the discipline of writing each week and to know that people have enjoyed the writing or taken something from it is especially helpful. Sometimes it can feel a little like shouting into the void… so the feedback is not only helpful, but also encouraging…. a reason to keep on practicing, to keep writing, and to keep thinking.
